The colour of aluminium façades tends to fade in the harsh South African climate. Thatchfield, therefore, required an inventive and resilient alternative. Terrazzo tiles were selected as the façade’s unique constituent for their durability and longevity.

Positioned adjacent to a golf course and within a residential area, Thatchfield Retail Centre endeavours to integrate with its community. The proposal does this by reflecting the flow of activities and the lifestyle of residents, thus drawing inspiration from dynamic movement.
The design depicts movement mainly in its façade and walkway. An intriguing patterned face is generated by incorporating variety in colour and direction within the terrazzo screens.

Additionally, other parts of the façade comprise textured face brick planes that create wave-like surfaces. With this emphasis on motion, an innovative break is introduced from the monotony of long static façades.
